How to change themes and fonts in Gtk apps?

I've installed gtk2_prefs and changed the theme to Clearlooks, but it doesn't seem to work. It just goes back to the ugly default theme. Also, how do I get my Gtk apps to have nice fonts?

If you are using kde there is a setting in kcontrol that you can check to have gtk apps look like you kde apps(theme).

Hmm well I don't want to install gtk-qt-engine because it has loads of gnome dependencies and anyway, I'm using KDE4.

Re: How to change themes and fonts in Gtk apps?

I use gtk-chtheme and it seems to work just fine though with KDE this shouldn't be necessary since it has it's own theme management program.
It's been a while since my last KDE session, but this is what I found googling and it sounded familiar:

Click on the K Menu and select CONTROL CENTER. In the window that comes up, click on APPEARANCE & THEMES. Then, you can change the window widgets in the STYLE option. Alternately, you can change the window border theme in the WINDOW DECORATIONS option. Be sure to click APPLY when you've made your selection. Close the window when you are finished.

I remember there being a FONTS selection also? So, check the control center twice and if still having problems, let us hear!

Well I found an option which says "Use colours in non KDE applications" which make the colour scheme the same, but my Gtk apps still look hideous! By the way, my KDE theme is fine, and there doesn't seem to be anything about Gtk in the control centre.

gtk-qt-engine adds applet to kcontrol

gtk-qt-engine doesn't work in KDE4.
