FAM doesn't work?

Hi! I recently installed ArchLinux on my notebook and I am really happy with Arch. But I've some minor things to fix, one problem is file system monitoring in KDE. I installed fam, I've put it in the daemons section of the rc.conf, it succesfully starts but it doesn't really work? I have to click on "reload" to see the actual content of a folder in konqueror after it changed, although fam runs:
ps aux | grep fam shows:garak     5013  0.0  0.1   3448  1332 ?        Ss   12:27   0:00 /usr/sbin/famd -T 0 -c /etc/fam/fam.conf
I haven't changed fam.conf and there's no error message in the logs sad

Re: FAM doesn't work?

Have you got networkmanager in your daemons array in /etc/rc.conf.  fam needs to come after it or you end up with it running but not working.

If not, post the daemons part of rc.conf so we can have a look.

Re: FAM doesn't work?

kdelibs use inotify by default to monitor files IIRC. You should only need fam if you want to monitor remote files.

Re: FAM doesn't work?

Hi! My the daemon section in the rc.conf looks like this:
"DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs ntpd crond acpid dbus hal fam laptop-mode alsa sensors fancontrol vmware)"
I need it only for monitoring local files, but inotify seems not to work, either? Some konqueror windows do acually synchronize correctly, other instances don't. Funny...
I opened two konqueror windows showing my ~/ and a konsole terminal and created a file with "touch xyz" to reproduce this...
edit: i'm using kdemod

My problem is that fam sometimes makes my cpu go to 100% and i have to kill it to restore the situation

This happens with Thunar frequently. The error logs will show thousands of listings for fam that happen in a few seconds. gamin is a drop-in replacement and it's not as buggy as fam. Install gamin and remove fam from the daemons array in rc.conf and some of the problems will lessen.

Re: FAM doesn't work?

Are you sure it doesn't work as it should in konqueror when fam is disabled, goethe?
