VLC & MPlayer - can't play .mov and 'Insufficient Ressources ... '

I tried to play a movie from RailsCasts. It didn't work with VLC; the sound was to be heard, but no video appeared.

So I decided to reinstall the Codecs-Package extra/codecs.

Now for some reason after doing that I am getting a new error from VLC:

Now what could I do about that? I have a Intel graphics card in my notebook, a 945GM, and I am running it with extra/xf86-video-i810.

I would check the setup for the video card. Possibly, you do not have a setting for 800 by 600 in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf , but I am guessing right now.

Guarantee does not cover shark bite, bear attack, or children under 5.

Your system is simply not fast enough. What CPU do you have?

There are some tweaks possible, however. Try using another video output (see mplayer -vo help for all possible outputs). Personally I have very good experience with -vo gl2 and especially with -vo x11 -zoom. To my surprise I was able to play 720p content on a Pentium-M "Dothan" 1,5GHz with only 35%-70% CPU usage.

Also add -framedrop if you A/V runs out of sync.

So `mplayer -vo x11 -zoom -framedrop file.mov` should do the trick. The chance of success will of course depend on your specs, but I'd say it should work, given the fact that the i945GM is only slightly older than my chipset (i955GM) and 800x600 QT doesn't even come close to H.264 720p.

I have almost same (or tottaly same)  problem with my old GF2 and 850Mhz CPU when compiz-fusion is activated.
So if you use compiz-fusion try to turn it off and then play movie.

I don't really think my system is too slow to do the job... I have a Core Duo L2400 build in. Sure thing, it's not the fastest CPU out there... but definitely fast enough to play a movie. smile Also, you can see my CPU specs in the MPlayer-output I posted in my first post.

Still, there has to be a fix for that. I can't possibly imagine that I always have to use some options to run this mov...

I don't think Xorg settings really matter, since afaik GPU acceleration is not supported on Linux (not that a i945 would help much).

Are you able to play Matroska (.mkv) 720p files with the -vo x11 flag?

I find a 100MB file to be pretty small smile. I also have a 60MB file (also Matroska h.264), but that one seems to be wider than usual (it's 1280 x 528 so officially it isn't 720p I suppose).

Here's the link: http://stuwww.uvt.nl/~s178024/h264/720p.mkv. It's a dual gbit server, so you should be able to utilize your full download speed.

Nope, I run the plain normal Arch. The L2400 isn't a 32 bit CPU being a Core Duo CPU. Only the Intel Core 2 Duo are 64 bit.

I have no problem here.
My computer did not like your video ( a small PIV...) and mplayer complain my CPU is a little bit too slow but it plays fine.

Maybe, you should give a try to mplayer-svn smile

Also, try this:

mplayer -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=0:fast:skiploopfilter=all 720.mkv

I have the same issue on my IBM T61 running gnome and compiz.  When I go back to Metacity from Compiz, mplayer works fine.  Maybe a compiz error.  Do you run compiz?
