I have been having problems with users not showing up in the user list. When I get to gdm, there is a grey box where the users should be. I have put the users in the "Include" in the configuration. I get an error when I shutdown. How can I find it?

EDIT: When I shutdown I get an error about gdm.pid not existing...

Hi miggols99!
This is know problem with gdm http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8125
Don't use the daemon startup method, use init levels.

Hi miggols99. What on earth are you doing with a gnome setup!? I thought KDE was your thing...
The gdm error message is because of *some* upstream thing acting up. Nothing to worry about though.
Use a themed gdm chooser (with userlist) instead. You shouldn't have to put the users in include. Edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf (to overide defaults.conf);
[daemon]
Greeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdmgreeter[greeter]
## put themes under /usr/share/gdm/themes/
GraphicalTheme=WhateverDirName
take a look at gnome-look.org for gdm themes.

Yes I would like to replace Gnome with KDE on this old computer. I'll switch when KDEmod puts KDE4 as default. Gnome seems to be a little sluggish on here. I put it on here because Ubuntu was on it before and everyone was used to Gnome, and I was busy on my other computer discovering KDE. I'm a KDE fanatic

Aha! I used to wonder why the System menu offered to "Log Out david..." but the following dialog would tell me that I was logged in as "Unknown".
