I think it may have something to do with all the apps residing in /opt (the e17 ones anyway).
Do I need to symlink somehow? Really not very clued up on how to manage the hierarchy to make things like this work.

Install gnome-menus and see if that helps. This is a dependency of of the scripts from takhis. It looks like you went the other way...

thanks that worked, except (as I expected) for the e17 apps.. Do you know if there;s a fancy way of adding them other than by hand?
