I checked out the wiki page on USB scanners, and thus typed in "sane-find-scanner". This gave me input that was relatively, well, sane.
[root@sporkbox xelados]# sane-find-scanner
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.
# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0x7e04 [Deskjet F4100 series]) at libusb:001:002
# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
# Not checking for parallel port scanners.
# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.
My printer/scanner is an HP Deskjet F4140 model, and is connected through USB. When I type in "scanimage -L" as outlined in the wiki page, it tells me that no devices were found. What can I do to get this thing to work? I'd rather not go over to Windows just so I can scan a drawing...
EDIT: Yes, I do have udev installed.

Install hplip. Then you may need to run hp-setup from the hplip package. Check wiki for another HP printer/scanner, some sections should apply to your device too:

After installing hplip, making sure I was in the 'lp', 'scanner', and 'printer' groups, and relogging in, I was able to use my printer/scanner combo with no problems! Thanks a lot, guys.
