Ipod flac conversion

I need a suggestion for a program that can manage my ipod's music and automatically convert flac files to another format ( mp3) that my ipod can handle. Another alternative would be a way of getting my ipod to play flac. Any ideas?

Re: Ipod flac conversion

ipods cannot play flac, unless you install rockbox or ipodlinux on them. in my experience, battery life does take a hit, though. and I am unaware of an ipod-management program that will do this for you.

I recommend just converting the flac to mp3 yourself. I wrote this wiki that explains how: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Convert_Flac_to_Mp3

very easy - takes about 3 mins to convert.

Re: Ipod flac conversion

gtkpod automatically converts flacs to mp3s when you try to add them to your ipod.

as far as getting your ipod to play flacs is concerned -- you'd need to replace the original firmware on the ipod with rockbox or something like that...  you can look into that if you want, but I wouldn't recommend it: the last time I tried rockbox I was only getting around 9 hours of playback on one battery charge compared to about 20 with original firmware.

Re: Ipod flac conversion

SVN Rockbox gets about 70% or more of the original firmware's playback time at the moment.  Honestly, the iPod firmware is such crap by comparison that at even half life it was worth it for me to switch completely, but I feel I could be in the minority here.

On topic, I have several flac albums I play with rockbox.  Space isn't really an issue.

Re: Ipod flac conversion

what encoding does gtkpod use? can it do V2/V0 LAME? if not, might as well just use my script if you want quality rips.

Re: Ipod flac conversion

That's the exact script gtkpod uses: http://pastebin.archlinux.org/24041
You can change it of course to use the kind of conversion you prefer (see line 100).
It seems to work OK, in my experience; it converts on the flu and keeps the converted files cashed in case you need to add them again in the future; the cashe size can be defined by the user (I usually keep it at zero).

I use bash scripts for converting almost everything else, but it's convenient (at least to me) to leave the ipod weirdness to gtkpod to deal with.

Re: Ipod flac conversion

they should really update that script. aps is now obsolete and not as good as -V 2 --vbr-new.

im very careful with my flac archives / mp3 encodings to just do it myself with a script than rely on an application to do things for me. most of my rips get uploaded and archived so I have to make sure everything is 100% exact.
