I recommend you to make gdm load automatically on startup by following the steps in
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GDM#Inittab_Method
and of course installing gdm with
pacman -S gdm
Then you can edit the GDM settings to make it login a set user after some seconds.

if your not using gnome, then I would look at slim. Its lighter on system resources and not dedicated to anyone DE. smile
