I was reading the X manual in the wiki and have a question about it. You suggest 2 ways of generating xorg.conf:
# hwd -xa
or
# xorgconfig
Now, what should one do?

Afaik, both generate a xorg.conf file. However the Xorg -configure command comes with X , for hwd -xa you need an extra package named hwd. Both will do good enough I suppose.
edit: If you use Xorg -configure you will need to move the generated file manually. You need to move it from /home/yourname/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
hwd -xa places it there by itself.

Whichever you prefer. xorgconfig will require you to know a little bit about your system since it asks you about your hardware a generates the file from your answers. hwd will guess what your file should look like by detecting your hardware.

Personally I prefer to use hwd method because it detects some of your hardware for you..
If you use an Nvidia card you can also use nvidia-xconfig to generate an xorg.conf file.
It's more about trying them all and find out which works best for you.. your not going to hurt anything as you can always delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf and start again. hwd is probably the easiest/fasted method though.

Xorg -configure configures everything for me exept keyboard layout.
My graphic card is nvidia.
Use the Source, Luke!

It's a matter of personal preference. I know my own hardware well, so always prefer xorgconfig with some minor tweaks.
