Hello everyone,
Since I upgraded to kernel26-2.6.23.14-1 I've been seeing errors like the following in dmesg:
gimp-2.4[6750]: segfault at 00000000 eip 0806acb0 esp bfb9bd90 error 4
Some applications randomly segfault and take Xorg down with them. Otherwise, the system is stable.
There's a thread at the Gentoo Forums which describes similar behaviour: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-47 … ml#4721771
I downgraded my kernel to 2.6.23.12-3 about 12 hours ago and I haven't seen that bizarre behaviour again. Before upgrading to 2.6.23.14 everything was running perfectly well. I think this is a kernel issue, not a hardware issue.
What are your thoughts on this?

Update: It crashed again, while I was running 2.6.23.12-3. It might be related to a bug in the SetWMName Xmonad module. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-46 … ml#4636049
I'll recompile XMonad without that module and report here.

I seem to be having a similar problem with both 2.6.23.12 and 2.6.23.14, xorg will just crash seemingly randomly after just a short time of usage. I don't know if I'm getting the segfaults though, how can check on that? Also, I don't have this problem when using 2.6.23.9. Hopefully someone can enlighten us on this problem, thanks.

I use openbox and am using the nvidia drivers.

Ok, my system has been far more stable since I stopped using the SetWMName Xmonad module. It seems my problem was caused by it, not the kernel. Sorry for the noise.

Check dmesg immediatly after xorg dies. From what you describe, the symptom isn't exactly the same: my xorg crashed because an application took it down; in your cause, xorg just dies. Sorry, I have no idea what it could be in your case.
