Wine - Wineboot.exe Runs When Launching Apps

Anyone else experiencing 'wineboot.exe' starting and continuing to run whenever any Wine application is launched? I've never seen this behavior before (though it could have been going on for a little while without my noticing).

I always thought 'wineboot.exe' was used to simulate Windows reboots, but I'm unclear now what it does or is doing. I have since read a little about it possibly having some functionality related to launching applications in the Startup folder, but I have no startup apps or services, and it seems if it were doing that, it would launch, perform its functions then terminate.

The process can be killed without any ill effects on currently running Wine applications as far as I can tell.

Is this a Wine bug, a package bug, or intended behavior? If intended, can it be turned off natively (without having to run a 'kill' script)?

Thanks.

PS
Is it possible that this process was split off from wineserver in a recent Wine update? The only reason I ask is that 'wineserver' seems to use much less RAM than I remember it using. Probably wrong about that, though.

I had a quick look at winehq.org and found this link: http://winehq.org/?issue=339#AutoRun/RunOnce support

Thanks.

I saw that as well as an earlier discussion / minor debate on the wine-devel mailing list from Feb., 2007 (that's where I found out about the 'Startup' [autorun] folder functionality I mentioned):

http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-de … 53974.html

But, even in light of that information, I'm still wondering if the process is supposed to hang around after it does its job. Seems unnecessary to run for the purpose of launching applications / services, and then hang around.

Re: Wine - Wineboot.exe Runs When Launching Apps

I haven't spent a lot of time on this subject as I can't find much about it anyway, and I really didn't want to sign up with Google groups to seek answers, but for now it seems the issue is moot in the near-term anyway:

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.emu … f8b03fc168

[The run and runonce functionality] is causing a lot of problems, and so it has been disabled in the current git, and should be disabled in the next release of Wine. You can revert to the previous version of Wine while waiting for 0.9.54, or edit your registry and delete the Run and RunOnce keys.

I wasn't really having issues with 'wineboot.exe' other than it wastes resources, but it looks like its gone for now. Hopefully, if and when they get other issues ironed out and try to re-implement it, it will run, do its job and exit.
