I installed mplayer yesterday and configured it to use gl2 as video output, tested it with some videos and everything was fine.
Afterwards I did a system update and a newer version of MPlayer was downloaded with it, then I opened a video and got an error message that video could not be initialized. I checked the options and the gl and gl2 output options dissappeared so I had to change the video output to xv.
How can I restore gl2 video output? I have a GNOME desktop and the latest nvidia packages from the repository.

It's probably related to the xorg-server update that broke a lot of things bug... try downgrading xorg-server to version 1.4.0.90-3 and if that doesn't work for you than the problem is mplayer.
BTW do you, by any chance, come from Bulgaria? (I'm asking, cause I know someone who uses exactly the same nickname.(and comes from Bulgaria, of course))

I'm from Peru, it seems my nickname is somewhat popular because I don't find it available always in some of the forums I subscribe.
Thanks for the reply, I'll try that as soon as I can, just for curiosity, what things did that update break?

Well... a lot of things... eclipse, VLC, amule, azureus, xaralx, etc... it would seem it effects allmost all java/wxwidgets programs...

Wow, I hope it gets fixed soon, I just installed Archlinux yesterday and I wanted to install azureus and eclipse after mplayer.

I couldn't downgrade the package, I think it wasn't in the cache or something. It seems the problem is with the mplayer package itself.
According to this bug report: http://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?do= … sk_id=9288
If I compile the package from source there is no problem, I commented on the bug report and I hope it gets fixed soon.

For curiosity: why are you using gl2?
I always used xv and I always had better performance...

Isn't gl and gl2 video output supposed to use OpenGL? I have a nvidia graphics card with its drivers installed so I thought it would be the most logical choice for me.
Anyway it is a bug, because gl was before and with the new version is gone.

Not to detract from your problem here, but the xv driver is far superior to the gl family.

recompile the package using abs. that's the solution
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

How do I recompile a package? In my old distro I just compiled mplayer from the SVN source because the one in the repo was very old. Also if I recompile this package wouldn't it be replaced when I update the system again?

Read up on ABS and makepkg in the wiki. If you don't want to pull down the entire ABS tree, you can find Mplayers build files from searching for mplayer on the main page, and going to the CVS entry to the right.
Note: I don't know if the ABS wiki page has been updated. It now requires that you explicitly download the package 'abs'.

Same opinion here.
I have a nvidia card and Xv offers far more performance than gl or gl2.
Try it.

I've not tested in terms of performance, but when I use the Xv output driver all media players (not just mplayer) give me flat colors on my laptop. Gl output has always given me nice colors and performance seems to be good enough for me so I haven't looked into it.

This may be a little hard to see, but it illustrates the point between gl and xv. If you look at the gl cut (left) and compare it to the xv cut (right), you'll see how 'grainy' it is. In fact, it's less than half of the resolution of the other. This is exactly the same behavior I've found in all of the Linux video players I've tried with both gl and gl2 (and most every other video driver).
