Can't install any DE on my desktop o_0

Here's the deal. I was using KDEmod and tried to install XFCE. Everything went well, until I logged in my XFCE session. No panels, no wallpaper, no right click, nothing. Since I have a laptop, and that's what I use mainly, I didn't care.

So I left it, and continued using KDEmod. Now I'm not really into KDE anymore, so I decided to install Gnome. The installation produced no errors, and when I tried to log in my Gnome session, everything went berserk. Any application I launch crashes, sometimes it says that the appearance daemon is spawning to fast, and it will try to reload it in the next session. I can't do anything!

Do I really need to reinstall Arch? What can I do to find the source of this problem?

It's gonna be a pain in the ass to backup all my music and *cof*movies/shows*cof*

Never mind. I formated the hard drive. I'm installing Linux Mint right now, cause I don't really have the time to configure an Arch installation. I'll install Arch when I have the time, or maybe i just give Gentoo a spin smile

Although I have not idea why you have such problems with XFCE and Gnome, but it seems like that something is wrong with GTK. As you have already formated your hard drive (I hope your music, movies, shows are still there), maybe nobody can help you figuring out the issue.

PS: If you have problems configuring Arch, I suggest you not even thinking about Gentoo. This is only my personal opinion of course.

I agree. Don't even touch Gentoo if you don't like configuration. I suggest Sabayon if bling is what you're looking for, otherwise, give Arch another try!

couple of weeks? I had Mint installed for 15 minutes until I thought "ahh screw it, i'm gonna stay up late configuring Arch"

It's not that I don't like configuration, I really like it..It's just that I don't really have the time right now, but what the hell...it's worth trading some hours of sleep

I had arch on a desktop and gentoo on a laptop. Dude, configuring arch is a walk in the park compared to Gentoo. Gentoo is amazing, and so is arch, for their different reasons. Becuase what you lose in time for gentoo you get paid back with a customized machine. Arch you get what you want fast, but maybe not exactly like you want to have it.

This sounds very familiar. I tried to install fluxbox and the cli dvd/cd burner bashburn a couple of days ago, was in the mood for something different. That completely crashed my system, I couldn't launch any kde application afterwards. As all my data was safe on another hd, I thought: what the hell, just install a distro that's easy to configure and come back to Arch later. I also went for Mint Linux.

raul_nds, I topped your 15 minutes by about 23 hours and 45 minutes. :-)
I just didn't like the feeling of not knowing what was going on "backstage". Now I'm back on Arch, this time with Fluxbox instead of kdemod. Enjoying it very much so far.
