While i do pacman -Syu this morning
i have an idea....
could it be much faster if you don't
load all package infos (compressed in *.db.tar.gz)..and load only the newest packages.. like cvs??
not the abs tree , the package tree with all infos about the packages??
why / why not??

I used to want that on debian when it took 45 minutes to apt-get update. But even on dialup, pacman only takes about 3 minutes (I only have extra and current repositories, mind you).
It might be possible to make a diff-based sync though. Maybe if the repositories get bigger.

i doubt it would be any faster. there would be more steps involved and it would require changing alot of the function of the current system. crux uses a system like you mention and it takes LONG LONG LONG LONG time.
but for all i know the arch developers are working something like this. for the record though it usually takes me less than a minute to sync and upgrade my system.

slow? it only takes half a min for me to sync and upgrade (unless big upgrades) and I have all the TURs, the current, extra, testing and unstable repositories. 8)

Atleast for me it made a large difference in the sync speed when I changed pacman to use wget in /etc/pacman.conf.
