Gnome terminal always blank

Hi,

I have a (relatively) fresh install of Arch Linux with the gnome and gnome-extra packages installed (and XFree86-4.4). I also installed a few of the other basic gnome packages.

Here's my problem: whenever I open gnome-terminal (either from the menu or by clicking the little terminal icon on the panel) I get a terminal window with a flashing cursor at the top-left and no prompt. Typing does not appear on the screen, nor does it have any effect ("exit" doesn't).

Does anyone know what could be causing this (and how to fix it)?

Cheers,
-- Pete

Re: Gnome terminal always blank

I would suspect that it is something in your default shell config.  I use tcsh and can get this on occasion.  My .cshrc has PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH entries that include symbolic links to nfs mounted discs.  If the nfs server is down, the terminal will just sit there for a long time.  It will eventually come around, but the response tiime to anythig (even ls) is minutes.

Are you running a custom kernel?

Do you have the devpts line in your /etc/fstab?

Xentac: Yes and no, respectively.

Uh.. what should that line look like?

Okay I got a devpts line from the web and tried it. It works great now, thanks!
