HI
Struggling here,
Got Gutenprint and cups installed, but if I go to install my printer as me (user sam), I can see my printer in the wizard under System -> Preferences -> Printer (in Gnome), then using the add printer wizard. However, I cannot complete the setup as I am prompted for a password, and even running lppasswd -a sam (and giving a password) does not work (I can give a new password, but the printer manager does not accept it). If I switch to administrator, I cannot see many printer drivers in the wizard at all.
Any advice?
Thanks

Hi,
this might not be what you want to hear, but I had so many problems (regardless of the Linux distro I tried -- and I play around with numerous ones) trying to setup and get a decent output from my Canon PIXMA iP5000 that I finally broke down and purchased the driver offered by TurboPrint. It seems to work quite well for my needs (which are almost exclusively limited to printing text). I have no idea how well it works for photos or colored graphics of any sort.
Good luck,

Hi
I have a Canon PIXMA IP5000 and I to have run into problems setting it up on different distributions, but I did have good luck with it on Arch. When I got it running I followed the CUPS configuration guide in the Arch Wiki and used the web interface. I have never had much luck with the gnome cups interface (some what of a disappointment with me as I am a gnome fan). As for when it asked for a user name and password I think I left it blank or used my root use and password I don't remember, sorry. I don't know how good of a practice using your root user is but I did get it to work.
On another note Arch is the only distribution I got duplex printing to work on the printer.
I don't know if this helps but good luck.
