The qt3/qt4 package issue

I hope this discussion will not be dismissed imidiatelly, since I think it's important.

I see that the idea is to replace the qt-3.3.x package currently named qt, with qt-4.3.x.

I think there's very much sense for the qt-3 package to be named qt3 and the qt-4 to be named qt4.
For one thing, the libraries are completelly different, the API's are different, and the ABI is certanly not compatible at all. If they didn't come from the same company, and were not named Qt we would treat them as separate software.

Also it's very probable that we'll have to have both libraries installed parallely for some time because of a lot of software that links to one or the other.

Now the change of qt package first beeing 3.x then 4.x obviously will produce problems.. which I think is not needed. For no special reason, you'll have to update a lot of packages to reflect the package name change (in dependencies).

So, my point is ... let the Qt-4.x.x package be named qt4 not qt. Thanks.

Re: The qt3/qt4 package issue

Whats the problem?  We now have qt (QT-4) and qt3 (Qt-3) packages.  Sure there will be some transition period but the devs tried to minimize this with all the packages in testing and notices about the move to extra.

Re: The qt3/qt4 package issue

Well.. it's ok for now yeah...
.. until Qt-5 comes smile

But more generally I don't see a reason for the Qt-4 package to not be called qt4, so that no shufling of dependencies would be needed in the future.

kdemod is not an official Archlinux project. If you have any problems with it address them to the project developers not the Archlinux ones

Re: The qt3/qt4 package issue

We allways try to provide the latest software. Its quite natural that qt was updated from 3 to 4. We only have qt3 for some legacy programms. But the number of those apps will reduced at least with the release of kde4.

And btw: this change was in testing for a very long period of time and nobody reported any bugs or other issues. This change should only affect package managers and not end users that much.

That's true, but there's no reason to make it harder for other people... even more people that make your ecosystem richer, like contributors of additional packages/repositories.

I really don't see a reason for the Qt-4.x.x package not remain named qt4.
But alas that went.

@Piere:
there'll probably be a lot of software using Qt-3 still.. either proprietary or not ... for a long time.

And sorry, but I didn't follow that mailing list nor [testing].

Re: The qt3/qt4 package issue

this is fine. qt3 was qt, and as kde has become 4 already, the default is qt4, hence the default qt.

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.
