Helloes!

Maybe a silly question, but I'm stumpered about this.

I can't reach websites that start with a -  (minus sign). I've tried all browsers. Whats up with this?

Cheers

like:
http://-imdb.com ?

Re: Strange internet problem

Well, it's a hyve page. Sortof myspace.com. Users can specify a username, suchas -kevin. The address will be http://-kevin.hyves.nl .
I won't post the address, since it's of a person and I think that it's not nice to post that profile here... But it's in the format http://-name.hyves.nl

Cheers

It seems that domain names must not start with a hyphen "-", so it's not a bug.

Re: Strange internet problem

@noalwin: I can go there on Windows with any browser, so something must be wrong here, so afaik it's a bug?

@Sjoden: going there without the leading - won't work, it'll be a totally different address then.

Thanks for the replies!

Re: Strange internet problem

this is not a bug. url's that start with a - go against standards. this has been discussed here before.

archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

Re: Strange internet problem

@bionnaki: I've looked up one: http://---lisa.hyves.nl/   This one works under Windows, but doesn't here.
@rson451: How come it'll work in the same browser, but only on a different OS?

Re: Strange internet problem

Probably because of the way the OS handles stuff at the TCP/IP protocol levels as this not a standard!
If you really need this social website you might want to try to setup virtualbox and run windows inside of it.

Re: Strange internet problem

Yes it is a standards issue, windows resolves the address even though it is not complying. For a work around go to www.network-tools.com and enter ---lisa.hyves.nl this will get you the ip address you can enter in the browser.

@funkyou the are different sites
