Okay, I just installed Arch on my laptop (three boxes so far!) and discovered to my dismay that it only runs KDE... pretty well. That doesn't satisfy me, mostly becuase I do some major multitasking and "pretty well" quickly goes downhill.
That said, I'm looking into some other path to the ultimate GUI.
Should I run Gnome? Should I run Gnome with a different WM? Should I just run a different WM?
My first question is: what is this? http://dtw.jiwe.org/share/screenies/screenie.png

I've always liked the OSX style scroller bar, and I would like to get it if possible. It's a great GUI element, in my opinion.
Other than that, any advice people can offer? I have experience with Gnome, but I'm largely open to suggestions.

i do not know what is being used in that screenie... but i am currently using XFCE and it is amazing. it is really light on resources as well, so it might be what you are looking for

it's probably either fluxbox or openbox with some mac like launcher.

Hrmm, taking a look around, I'm feeling quite partial to fluxbox (I do remember using it back when I ran Damn Small Linux on an old laptop), but XFCE's website is down. I'll keep browsing.

I prefer openbox over fluxbox, personally.

That's one of the Artwiz fonts, but I can't recall which one.

There's a "ROX" tooltip at the bottom, so ROX-Filer is probably managing the desktop and icons. Doesn't look like a complete ROX desktop, though. Its panel isn't as pretty as that.

My guess is that it's Fluxbox, with Rox as the launcher(The person's mouse is hovering over the launcher, you can see "ROX" over the terminal icon.), and gkrelm(spelling?) for the system monitor on the side, because I don't think conky can have those icons. Fluxbox and Obenbox are both great lightweight window managers. Each has their own pros and cons. Personally, I feel more comfortable in Fluxbox, I like the menu syntax more, and I haven't had much luck finding a good panel for Obenbox that works for me, without some scripting(it doesn't come with one). Although, Obenbox has a more standard way of where it places its config files, to me at least. Your mileage may vary...

That "panel" at the top of the screenshot looks like the Fluxbox toolbar (less the prev/next workspace, prev/next window buttons).
Xfce is a nice light desktop environment. It comes with xfwm4 as its window manager but you can change that to something else if you like (e.g., Openbox). xfwm4 has compositing.
I prefer to use a window manager on its own and I generally stick with Fluxbox or Openbox. You may want to look at IceWM as well. And don't forget all those tiling window managers (dwm etc.).
Try a bunch and see which one you like best.
Edit: Yep, that system monitor is gkrellm.

Well, I tried OpenBox, XFCE, and Fluxbox, and I decided to go with Fluxbox.
Now the problem is that I installed Avant Window Navigator and I'm told I need a compositing WM to run it.
There must be some way this is done in Fluxbox, but it isn't appearing to me. All the references I've found just say to install Compiz or Beryl, but wouldn't that be replacing Fluxbox, since they're all window managers? How do you get AWN to work with Fluxbox then?

I think you'll need something like this to have compositing in Fluxbox, I could be totally wrong though, I don't bother with that stuff.
