Asus G1S

After trying a few easier linux distros in the past (Kubuntu, Mint, Mepis, PCLinuxOS, had Debian up and running fine for a while but it was booorrring...) I thought I'd give something faster a try.  I like the idea of being able to completely customize everything for my system, and for me.

I have an Asus G1S laptop and I've heard that it runs flawlessly on Arch.  Which is great because PCLinuxOS failed miserably... and I hate Ubuntu.  Is there anything special I need to know before I dive into installation?  Here's the hardware

Hope to have it up soon!:D

I'd be willing to do an install writeup for this laptop for future reference if anyone would like that?

Re: Asus G1S

Arch is not as easy as those distros that you have listed. With a general arch install you will just have the base system and need to install everything else. Checking out the install guide and possibly printing it out might be a really good idea! http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tall_Guide

Also there is a wiki page on your laptop regarding hardware, http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Asus_G1

Re: Asus G1S

That's a different laptop, mine is the G1S, not the G1.  A little different.  I know it's not as easy and about the difference in the install and I'm ready to handle that.  I was just looking to make sure that there aren't any specific things I need to worry about with this laptop as some other linux distros have thrown fits...

Re: Asus G1S

My bad I feel like an idiot tongue I was in hurry last night, sorry!

Anyways if the arch cd boots just fine, you'll probably have no problems installing arch. I'd have say 95% of the time the cd boots with most modern systems. It had a hicup with mine but I also believe it was due to the kernel and not so much the cd (Dell Vostro 1000).

Really the best advice I could give any new person to arch is:
1) Be comfortable with the command line
2) Be willing to read
3) READ THE OFFICIAL INSTALL GUIDE! (I can't stress this enough)

Re: Asus G1S

Anything is possible

CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL (aka snd-hda-intel module) for the sound

http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/showp … cat/myprod

It appears that you need the snd-hda-intel module loaded in the kernel (you can run lsmod to check)

If that is in the kernel did your add youself to the audio group?

if you still can't get it to work, please post in a new topic and don't hijack this one
