via video drivers and xorg

Just did a fresh install of arch. I installed the driver xf86-video-via for my onboard via video card, however I can't seem to get X to start with this driver. I swapped via in place of vesa in xorg.conf, and also tried unichrome. With either X is unable to start. Perhaps Im not entering the right thing in xorg.conf? Any ideas?

Re: via video drivers and xorg

/var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Did you run pacman -Syu after the installation, before installing X11 stuff? Got new pacman, kernel, etc? Rebooted?
I bet not.

Re: via video drivers and xorg

I did run pacman -Syu, then rebooted and installed xorg and gnome and whatnot. With "vesa" as the driver X starts but my monitor tells me the input signal is out of range, ( I intially forgot to install the via driver...duh) After installing the driver and replacing vesa with via, X will not start at all

X complains that it can not load...or find, I dont remember which...module "via"

Re: via video drivers and xorg

Here is my xorg.conf file. I DO realize that the first res. under the screen section is 1268x1024 in every instance. It was 3 am and I messed that up. But I dont believe that's the issue as I think gnome defaults to 1024x768, and I was having this issue before any of that was changed.

Re: via video drivers and xorg

Ive finally got X up and running with the vesa driver, but I still can't get it going with the via driver. I've heard there are issues with via video drivers on other distros, is the case with Arch as well maybe?

Re: via video drivers and xorg

There are three VIA drivers in the repos: xf86-video-via, xf86-video-unichrome and openchrome. I'd say try openchrome.
