2 audio programs running at the same time

in arch i can have 2 audio programs running at the same time. i have 2 other distros that i mess with (puppy & antix) but i have to turn off one programs to accses  the other. does any one know why?

that's because your sound card doesn't support hardware mixing:

Probably they use an older version of alsa that doesn't have dmix enabled by default.
