ata1.00: exception Emask

Ok, i've just got a new shuttle computer and i'm unfortunatly having problems hmm My problem is that my CD-ROM seems to have issues beeing correctly configured by the kernel. The optical drive is an NEC-3500A with the latest firmware installed. Anyway, i receive errors like this upon boot:

ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
ata1.00: cmd a0/01:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 cdb 0x5a data 64 in
         res 40/00:02:00:0c:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 Emask 0x4 (timeout)

And boot takes an extra five minutes than its supposed to.

After looking around on the forums i've found several posts indicating that i should switch back to the legacy-ide system instead of pata (this is an ide drive, not sata). Since i didn't want to mess around with my system i booted the arch install disc with "arch legacy-ide". This didn't help though and i still got errors concerning the CD-drive hmm It's really wierd, cause the optical drive worked perfectly with my last computer...

Anyway, heres my dmesg output:

Re: ata1.00: exception Emask

In examining your dmesg I see evidence of resetting of the ata1.00 device to dma25.  I have had experience with limiting the dma to dma2 on a Compact flash to IDE adapter.  This is supposedly caused by libata-acpi module.

I advised one user having the dma25 to change his hooks and shift to a different Module.  The reference post can be found on my bug #9386 and was posted by ashren.  He had slow DVD dma25 as I recall.

The problems are similar but not identical and mine is related to the inability of the ata system to ID UDMA 80-wire cables.

Things get more involved when sata is included.....

Have a look at the details I have referenced and you may find a clue or two.

Re: ata1.00: exception Emask

I'm seeing the same sort of issues on my X64 box. At first I thought it was my hard disk as I'd recenlty purchased a new one, but on initial investigation I found that the molex to SATA power cable was of a really poor quality so I though the disk was losing power some how. It seemed to be fine for a couple of weeks, but has just returned! I noticed the error as the server was acepting a large rsync job from one of my laptop users.

That said, I'm not sure if it is my hard disk. ATA1.00 is the secondary ATA port isn't it? if so, then it's objecting to my DVD rom.
