In the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log there are information about the errors.
You can also use xorgconfig to generate a xorg.conf file.

look up the specs for your monitor and make sure the horizontal and vertical sync ranges are right in your xorg.conf. some monitors allow really high resolutions at reduced refresh rates, if xorg is trying to push a higher refresh rate than your monitor supports at that resolution it will crash.

also realize that problems may arise even if you have the 'correct' values for vert and horiz refresh in your xorg.conf. I've had problems with my monitor giving me 'out of range' messages if I use the stock refresh rates (it's picking a refresh rate that's too low for the resolution I want, so it's dying essentially). Basically, you'll need to narrow down the band of refresh rates from what's given by the manufacturer if you get these kinds of problems.
I hope that made some sense....

what resolution are you trying to get? you could try adding modelines as found in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or run gtf with the resolution and refresh you want to generate one for you (e.g., "gtf 1680 1050 60").
