Kernel Panic when booting with another HD attached

I currently boot of my SATA drive. Whenever I try to boot up with an additional IDE or SCSI drive, I get a kernel panic. Anyone have any ideas?

What's the error message the kernel panics with? Does the sata drive remain at the same device node? You might want to use persistent naming for your hdd's.

Thanks for the link, Ramses.  I had just started searching for a solution to this very problem.  Editing /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst to use UUIDs instead of device numbers worked for me.

I edited fstab, but grub wouldn't boot when I changed it. I'm sure once I get that working it will fix my issue. I suspected that in the first place. Thanks.
