Any webcam users?

I made another thread I cannot find, apologies for duplicating if it's still here.

Just wondering if you have a webcam and have it working with Arch, which one and how easy/difficult was it to get it to work??

TIA smile

Re: Any webcam users?

i do. built into my laptop. getting it to work was as easy as installing linux-uvc-svn and adding my user to the video group.

archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

Re: Any webcam users?

USB video device class (UVC) webcams are great. Its a standard for video devices over usb. When you say standard, you say "it will work anywhere". These webcams are compatible with Vista. When I was shopping for mine, I looked for Vista compatible webcams. I chose the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. It works great!

Re: Any webcam users?

There's a link in your profile and at the bottom of the main forums page that will list all your posts too... in case you, y'know, lose another one of your topics again.

EDIT: I didn't mean that in a rude way. After re-reading it I can see how one could possibly take it like that, but I just meant it as trying to be helpful.

Re: Any webcam users?

lol, no sweat fflarex. That was quite helpful actually as I was looking for that option, and I have a habit of almost never looking at the very bottom of web pages wink

Also, what software do you guys use with your webcams?? I mean just to record and edit video clips, not Skype or such for communication.

I'm using a Logitech Quickcam 5000 with uvc drivers, usually with amsn. Works fine most of the time.

Re: Any webcam users?

I have about 4 webcams lying around and they all work under linux.  Seriously, you're going to be hard-pressed to find one that doesn't.  Obviously googling "linux <brand> <model>" is going to be the final word, but honestly it's really unlikely.

A few specific ones:

Dell laptops come with uvc-compatible ones, and work quite well.
Creative makes a webcam called Webcam Instant that costs (if you look around) at most $5.  It's a steal and while the colour isn't amazing, they're very fast and work well with skype.  Uses the gspca driver.

Re: Any webcam users?

I am trying to use the linux-uvc-svn package, but when I run modprobe uvcvideo, I get module not found.  What am I missing?

You aren't doing something silly like running a different kernel, are you?

If not, try rebooting.

Re: Any webcam users?

I just got a Logi Quickcam Pro 9000, it works fine in Skype and such but I've been searching and have not found a program to record video itself from the webcam other than xawtv, which crashes for me (will post output when I get home).

Is there anything similar to the Logi software in XP, for example? And also, why is it that every webcam I've tried in linux is always with such a brutal framerate? In XP my Quickcam is really smooth, as it should be since it's a pretty good one.

I'm feeling like my webcam thus far in linux has no real functionality outside of Skype or Kopete or some communications messenger. I really only bought it to be able to record videos, not to communicate in an IM program at all really sad

Sorry, but I have one from logitech notebook pro it has (logitech tech said) some hardware bug in chip on all series it's not only my model there a lot of model on this chip. That's why I ask I do not want to buy and to sell another one just for fun.
Googling in internet give me one solution - just ask directly people ALREADY using one or another device.
What I am looking for must have hardware or software sensor, at least 1.3 MB, built-in microphone and usb of cause.

Re: Any webcam users?

Nope, I'm running the default kernel.  Ive had that package installed since the last time I rebooted, so I dont think that changes anything.. It is a very odd error though.. not finding the module.

Hi Colbert!

Either your webcam in Arch Linux works in terms of video quality worse than in Windows XP?
A picture not clear or worse 2bit image and what about to other side either they see you clearly or the same mater bad?

Re: Any webcam users?

I was talking to a friend in Skype and testing the video during the call, he said it looked okay. It must be the linux driver that just seems to render all devices to the same low quality. I just tried it using the Logi software on XP and man, it is so super smooth. Just unacceptable performance in linux when you know the cam can do so much more.

I think I'm going to stick to my handheld digicam and just transfer video via firewire. I figured a webcam would be nice but it's not worth the money when it can't perform as it should sad

Re: Any webcam users?

I have a Logitech Quickcam Messenger and it works really great. The only issue I have is when I use it with skype, my CPU goes 90-95% usage.

I had a microsoft webcam which I couldn't use. It was detected, but it didn't work properly. Very pixelated image and very dark.

Re: Any webcam users?

I tried it in Virtualbox and XP. (I haven't used VMWare).

In Virtualbox it reads the device, installs it, I had installed the Logi software too, got all the way up to the point of opening the Quick Capture program so I could start recording, but what do you know-- it just freezes as it tries to load up the cam. I checked the Virtualbox forums and many others with the exact same challenge, and one developer reported they are fixing it for upcoming releases. So for now, no go...

I have a pretty standard Hitachi digicam I got a while ago. Just so I don't mislead you, I'm talking about a handheld digital camera. I record clips onto mini-DVD-RW's and can also connect it via firewire to my comp and it behaves like a digital camera, SD card, etc.-- a mounted device that I can browse and then copy/move videos over from it to my comp.

Re: Any webcam users?

You mean video quality is the same as in Windows XP?
By the way, how many does sensor have (1.3 or 2 mb pixcels)?
Thx~

Re: Any webcam users?

There's no issue with video quality because the digicam is a standalone camera, an actual video camera, I'm talking about a camera like this one.
