Firefox doesn't like politics?!? :)

Weird thing... Firefox crashes when I try to load this page:
http://politics.nytimes.com/election-gu … index.html
(or, to be politically correct, this one: http://politics.nytimes.com/election-gu … ndex.html)

I just updated to the new version with pacman (firefox-2.0.0.11-2, flashplugin-9.0.115.0-2), but nothing changes.

Any clue, anyone?

Paolo

Re: Firefox doesn't like politics?!? :)

and this is a problematic picture?
http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?imag … ashsp5.png

firefox was moved to the new directory,
from
/opt/mozilla/lib
to
/usr/lib/

maybe this has something to do with the issue (as it seem it is not related to arch)

Re: Firefox doesn't like politics?!? :)

I think it's java/flash related rather than firefox/swiftfox. I'm using the noscript plugin (which allows me regulate which java/flash scripts are run when visiting a site) and can view the page without ff crashing.
FF will crash though when I allow the nytimes.com to run java/flash apps.
Hope this helps.

Oh, the link for the add-on is below if anyone is interested.

Re: Firefox doesn't like politics?!? :)

Firefox crashes here too:

[marc@~] /usr/bin/firefox
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so [/opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so: file too short]
/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.11/run-mozilla.sh: line 131:  3834 Segmentation fault      "$prog" ${1+"$@"}
[marc@~]

The "failed to initialize shared library..." message appears when I go to archlinux.org.  When I go to the NY Times page, I get the 2nd line (Seg fault).

Bah!  My mplayerplug-in file has size 0...  Also, I have 2 plugins dirs in /opt/mozilla.  The second dir has ':' appended to it.  Not sure if that's normal or not.

Ok, I fixed mplayer plugin, and the NY Times page still crashes.  It's not related.  Sorry for the wild goose chase.

Re: Firefox doesn't like politics?!? :)

I'm using firefox-2.0.0.11-2 and flashplugin-9.0.115.0-2 and had no problems to load the page. The only Firefox extension I have installed is Vimperator. Java and Flash are enabled here. Could it be somehow related to the graphics driver?

I'm still having the mplayer issue, how did you fix it?
Here is my error:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so [/opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so: file too short]

As a temporary hack, I linked /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so, which works..but seems dirty.

Hi Misfit,

Originally, I deleted /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so.  It was a zero byte file.  Then I reinstalled the plugin and it worked fine.  But just now, I noticed that the plugin stopped working again.  I had another zero byte file!  This time it was /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so.  So once again, I reinstalled the plugin (version 3.50-3), and it's working for now...

HTH,
peart

Re: Firefox doesn't like politics?!? :)

Thanks, Peart.
I just renamed /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/ which didn't break anything, so I guess it's looking in /usr/ now, because it still works without the symlink I made, so all is well.

Re: Firefox doesn't like politics?!? :)

Crashes with Konqueror too. I bet it's related to Flash plugin.

[freakcode@atena ~]$ pacman -Qe | grep flash
flashplugin 9.0.48.0-1

your flash package is old, try to update to the latest.

As I mentioned in my previous post:
installation folder for ff changed, you may see if firefox see plugins

I know it's old - I'm holding this package because the newer flash plugin, that includes a new nice GTK+ right-click menu, doesn't work on Konqueror and also crashes.
