Why my hard disk appears as scsi disk, /dev/sdaX?

I want to know why pre-compiled kernel of Archlinux uses scsi attachment with my hard-disk. When I installed Archlinux my hard-disk was running in UDMA-2 but it supports UDMA-5.

Now I've compiled my own kernel and my hard-disk apperas as /dev/hda, it is running in UDMA5 without forcing him with hdparm.

There are some avantages using /dev/sda instead /dev/hda?

Thank's!

Welcome to the ArchLinux Forum, DoNoBaN!

I don't have the answer to your question but this explains why its sda instead of hda. I don't know if its just hdparm which is reporting wrong values if sda is used or if you really have an advantage in using hda. I hope someone with more knowledge in this field notes this thread...

Jeje thanks for the welcome, I forgot introducing me before big_smile

hdparm shows that the hard-disk is running in udma2 with sda and udma5 with hda, but if I run hdparm -tT, the outputs are very similar

I want to use my own kernel, what options are needed for use /dev/sdX instead of hdx?

Re: Why my hard disk appears as scsi disk, /dev/sdaX?

I have googled the hdparm indications for the udma assigns and have found one reference which suggests that hdparm resets udma when it is invoked.  The recommend to prevent reset is as follows:

                    hdparm -d1 -X69 -t /dev/sdx.........................

The entry X69 is udma 5, X68 udma 4,,,,etc.
