Hi everyone,
I am trying to fine tune my xorg.conf. I am a little confused about NVIDIA drivers in combination with modelines. From what I gather the NVIDIA drivers override a lot of the settings specified in the xorg.conf file. Let me explain my setup first, then I will get to what is confusing me.
Relevant Hardware:
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500
Shuttle XP17 display (DVI connection)
Sun LSA800 display (VGA connection via DVI adapter)
I am trying to use a TwinView setup with the Shuttle as my main display and the Sun as my secondary. I have done a lot of research regarding the NVIDIA drivers, TwinView, and standard xorg.conf setup. However one thing I haven't been able to figure out is: Are modelines needed when using the NVIDIA drivers?
It seems obvious that they aren't for my Shuttle because with the UseEdidFreq option the driver gets this info from EDID, but my Sun display doesn't support EDID and a warning is noted in my xorg.log that it was unable to read the EDID for the display. I also have the HorizSync and VertSync settings specified under device, and a section for each display with these settings as well. Also, does metamodes in any way correspond to the modelines? I've noticed that when I have modelines specified under the NVIDIA settings utility there are resolution and refresh rate settings that will use the names I specified for modelines in the metamodes option.
My only 100% successful xorg.conf file uses no modelines, and specifies the metamodes using the same names the NVIDIA settings tool does when it writes an xorg.conf (i.e. "<XRes>x<YRes>_<Refresh>"). I am also unable to get my Sun display to even come on when X launches unless I use a refresh rate of 75. I'd like to have it at 60 to match my Shuttle. With this setup I can't change the resolution.
If modelines are necessary, or would help in any way, like maybe making the the video tearing I'm experiencing in video playback and OpenGL apps go away. Then my next question is how do I find the correct modelines? I have found many articles on how to do so and some nifty modeline generator utilities, but they all seem to say something a little different, and want info that I don't have. Like the pixel clock of my vid card. My xorg.log file reports my displays as having a max pix clock of 330 (Shuttle) and 400 (Sun). This is way higher than I have seen in any of the examples. Plus why would my ancient sun monitor have a higher clock than my new Shuttle? Also some of the calc utilities say that I need to use the max pix clock of my video card, not my display. How do I find this (already googled for it extensively)? Just to make things more complex, the Sun display is so old that I can't find any documentation for it anywhere. The only thing I've found that gives any info on it does not specify an H/Vsync range, but rather a set of specific frequencies: http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors/sun/lsa800lcd.html. Does this mean that this display only supports modes that use those exact freqs? and if so how the heck would I get the modelines for that?
As you can probably tell from my ranting I am quite confused and have exhausted my research abilities. Thus I'm asking: "Please help!"
Edit: To clarify and put all my issues in one place:
1. Video tearing during playback and in OpenGL apps. (e.g. Quake III)
2. Can not change resolution or refresh rates from NVIDIA settings utility.
3. Would like to know that the correct vid modes are being used for my monitors.

As far as I know, the dot clock freq doesn't have to be exact, but must fall within a range. If you know the vertical refresh rate you want, then you don't need to specify the dot clock freq to get a modeline. Often there's an optimal resolution and refresh rate mentioned in the specs for the monitor, and that's what you'd want to use. Do you need a modeline? Try it and see. I'd also set the DPI with the nvidia driver.
With all the possible variables there are to test, you're going to go nuts thinking about it. If I were you I'd put the optimizations aside for now and try more vanilla setups to solve the video problems you have. It's a matter of priorities: make it work properly first ... then make it go faster. And proceed carefully to make sure that some tweak is not causing a problem to appear.
Otherwise I can't see how you can debug all that stuff.
