ALSA and aRts [SOLVED]

While messing with KDE and the console the other day, I discovered that aRts and ALSA use different volume controls. The ALSA volume has to be all the way up for aRts apps to have output, but when ALSA is up and aRts is muted, ALSA applications (like firefox, which beeps annoyingly every time find-as-you-type fails) are still on full volume. This leads to some embarrassing beepy noises coming from my laptop in public places, and it's irritating to have to mute volume twice. Is there any solution to this?

Thanks,
- Tomkin

Re: ALSA and aRts [SOLVED]

The beeping is probably from the PC speaker.  Here's how to disable it:

Aha. That works well, thank you.
