Re: Bootsplash : Applying splash on a patched kernel makes a Kernel Panic

I'm just about to give up...

I think I've tried everything :
Arch kernel26 + bootsplash patch
Arch kernel26 + bootsplash patch + gensplash
Arch kernel26 + bootsplash patch + fbsplash
Arch kernel26 + fbcondecor patch
Arch kernel26 + fbcondecor patch + fbsplash
Kernel26fbcondecor from AUR
Kernel26fbcondecor from AUR + fbsplash
------------------------------------------------------
NOTHING WORKS

I was stubborn and I absolutely wanted to make it work before trying to use kernel26fbcondecor from AUR.
At least I had a bootsplash, even if I had a kernel panic because of the initframs.

But with the kernel26fbcondecor from AUR the boot breaks during HOOKS and don't find my Arch partition hmm

Attempted to create root device '/dev/sda5'
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name '/dev/sda5'
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected. Try using the rootfstype= //something
Waiting device to settle... done
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name '/dev/sda5'

Does someone know a REAL wiki which describes the entire method ? I'd like to have a REAL bootsplash (not Splashy or something like that)

It's weird because I think that my kernel compilation is good (with kernel26) and that the problem comes from the initframs. Here is my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf :

HOOKS="base udev ide pata scsi sata usbinput filesystems"

It seems that this mkinitcpio.conf works with kernel26 but not with kernel26fbcondecor.

I tried with fbsplash, adding "fbsplash" in the HOOKS and I have the same problem.

Splashy is a real bootsplash.

Btw, did you know, fbsplash works without the kernel patch?

Re: Bootsplash : Applying splash on a patched kernel makes a Kernel Panic

Yes I know, but what I'd rather have is a bootsplash which starts from the beginning of the boot. I think I have to use a patched kernel to do that. Fbsplash works but the bootsplash starts at the end of initframs (I think) And, according to me, it doesn't worth to have a splash if it runs only for 10 seconds.

And I think (I'm not sure) that this is the same for Splashy, it doesn't start at the beginning but only at the end of initframs.

Just tell me if I'm wrong.

EDIT :
I've just tried Splashy and even if it waits while loading initframs before starting, it starts quicker than I thought and it's quite nice. But is there a way to switch from silent mode to verbose mode by typing a key ("Escape" for example) ?

I'm curious and I won't give up the "patched kernel way", I want to understand why it doesn't work. Meanwhile Splashy is quite nice:)

For you bootsplash people out there, how would this work with luks encrypted root? Which means i have to enter a password during boot?
