x264 & preload

I've been using x264 a lot recently & have found high br/res videos to suffer frequent, though intermittent pauses while the preload daemon is active. This is apparent within both VLC & Mplayer, using many different x264 builds. The moment that the preload daemon is stopped, playback becomes consistently smooth.

I don't find preload essential, though I'd like to retain it & get to the bottom of this. I guess the first step is to ask you fellow archers whether you observe the same issue, as Google provides nothing I seem to be in the dark.
