Ratpoison

I played with ratpoison wm for some time.
I like it, but I have one big problem with it, witch still keeps me in Openbox.

I can not use clt+alt+Fx or ctrl+alt+bcksp keys.
Do enyone know how to fix this?

Re: Ratpoison

What do you want to use these keys for (and what do you mean by "Fx")?
As far as I remember, Ctrl+alt+bksp worked fine for me. Have you got any particular keyboard? (yes I have not really a clue about what to do tongue).

Re: Ratpoison

Ah, I see. Well, for now I can only tell you they worked straight away for me. There must be something wrong with your configuration... This is as far as I can go.

Re: Ratpoison

I tired more and strange thing that in beginning it works, but after some clicks clt+t and etc these hotkeys refuse to work anymore.
Maybe this is lack of my skill, I have to turn off or press something before pressing ctrl+alt+F1?

Re: Ratpoison

Are all the other keys working fine after that strange behavior? Could it be that some key gets stuck?

Anyway try posting your .xinitrc (if you use startx) and your .ratpoisonrc files.

Re: Ratpoison

It might be a keymap issue: that backspace key might not be one:

check it with xev.
or just filter out the stuff with the right name: xev | grep BackSpace

Re: Ratpoison

ProzacR,

Did you find a solution?  I'm having the same issue.  The default ratpoison configuration won't allow me to switch to virtual terminals, exit X, nor will it light my capslock and numlocks leds on.

Other window managers (like awesome) work fine.

Re: Ratpoison

I was having this issue, then I realised I had two window managers starting up from .Xinitrc: ratpoison and Xmonad. So, check that you didn't make my same mistake.

Re: Ratpoison

This sounds unrelated to Ratpoison, unless you have specifically configured it to use those keystrokes for something else. Ratpoison uses the ^T  prefix key specifically to avoid this kind of thing.

Re: Ratpoison

ratpoison is potentially doing something at some point, because I can run a different window manager and all is good.  It might actually have something to do with X though.  So I'll check with the ratpoison guys before I start decomposing my arch install.

I really do want to give this window manager a try.

Re: Ratpoison

Hmm, I'm having this issue as well, but if I simply reload the configuration it gets fixed again.
If you don't know how to reload the configuration, it's simply:

ratpoison -c "source ~/.ratpoisonrc"

See if that fixes any issue.

Re: Ratpoison

Ok, some how I tracked down part of the problem.  ctrl-alt-f1 ... and ctrl-alt-backspace work now.

Commenting the following two lines out of my .xresource file hmm

!!xft settings
Xft*dpi:100
Xft*antialias:true

I bet ratpoison has some problems with xft fonts.  Now my fonts are ugly sad

My capslock led is still not responding to capslock.  So I now have two more problems to solve

Re: Ratpoison

What I do to get antialiased fonts is using the gnome-setting-daemon. I think it's the best way to keep everything in place using Gtk applications. Do you think it's a viable solution for you?

(I have those lines in .Xdefaults, and I don't have any issue with them, you could try to use that file instead of .xresources, also).

Re: Ratpoison

Thanks finferflu,

I don't run anything from gnome and the only Gtk apps I run on a regular basis are gvim and firefox.  These don't really need a settings daemon.

I did try naming my .xresources file back to .Xdefaults, but the Xft setting are still bothering ratpoison.

Re: Ratpoison

As a last resort, try changing your Xft*dpi to 96 or 75, sometimes, oddly enough, settings like those can really mess up things. You can even omit that option altogether and start X with

startx -- -dpi 75

Or your preferred one. Good luck!

Re: Ratpoison

I have the same problem, fter a few clicks and a few ctrl+t's the ctrl+alt+Fx and ctrl+alt+BS combos do no work and the LEDs for the locks don't work. I tried running "startx -- -dpi 75", but that doesn't help. What else can I do? I have only "exec ratpoison" in .xinitrc and I haven't made a .ratpoisonrc . In .Xdefaults I have:
xterm*background: #111111
xterm*foreground: #EEEEEE
xterm*faceName: Terminus:pixelsize=16
EDIT: I suppose I need to disable Xft? How can I do that?
