[SOLVED] Sharing a /tmp

sda1 = Arch Linux [openbox]
sda2 = Arch Linux [kde]
sda3 = mounted as /tmp for 'sda1'

Should there be any problems with sharing the /tmp with both the Arch partitions? As I understand from another thread, I need to "chmod 1777 /tmp" the /tmp partition, but just wondering whether or not it's a good idea to share it.

Thanks

I don't see a problem with that...  AFAIK /tmp should be cleared between reboots.

Re: [SOLVED] Sharing a /tmp

If you've got enough RAM you can mount /tmp in RAM instead of on a physical disc.

none    /tmp    tmpfs   nodev,nosuid,noexec,nodiratime,size=768M        0       0

3GB would probably count as enough tongue but I think i'll save my RAM for other things. Thanks for the tip!

Why do you need two arch installs ? If it's just for different WMs/DEs than you could easily do with only one. Just install both Openbox and KDE.

The main reason is that sda2 is for testing out other distros. It just so happens that at the moment I want to try out KDEmod.

The other reason is that I like keeping a very clean installation. Including OpenOffice and GIMP, my openbox partition only takes up the following:

$ df -h | grep sda1
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1             9.9G  1.8G  7.7G  19% /

Eventually my second partition will probably have something like Kubuntu or PCLinuxOS on it so that I can show off funky 3D effects to non-linux users. 'Why not use Arch?' I hear you ask. Mainly so if someone is interested, it's a more noob friendly distro for them to get started with.

Looks like you're trying really hard to promote linux. Good luck with that. May the source be with you wink

The better question is: why have only one?  Disk space is cheap now.  For example, I have a 320G drive -- 20G for Arch (and I only use 25% of that), 200G for data ... and that leaves 100G to play with.  Once I got Arch all dressed up, I cloned it to another partition; this one I'll keep as it is.  The other one I'll experiment with.  It's always nice to have a fallback position.

I might even do one more to see how minimalist I can get.  Why not?  I have the disk space.
