cut screen on console after X

when i boot on arch the console is ok, i can see all the lines but when i change to init 5 and startx if i go back to init 3 the screen is cut, so i can see about 3 lines behind. when i use nano the commands dont show they're hidden in this part of the screen that i cant see.
any help?

So what DE/WM you use and what programs you start with init and startx?

I've run into a similar problem in other distros so it's likely not specific to Arch, for some reason the screen centering in console and when X starts are different (and shifted differently from Windows for that matter).  What I do is just press the auto-adjust button on the monitor each time it's off, I'm not sure if there's anything else to be done.
