nvidia driver won't work

I can't seem to get my graphics card to work.  It is a GeForce 5500 and is supposed to work with the regular nvidia driver.  I have also tried using the nvidia-96xx driver with the same results. I am using the VESA driver right now

this is the error that i get:

could not open '/lib/modules/2.6.24-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
No such file or directory
NVIDIA: faled to load the NVIDIA kernel module
Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

It was working a few days ago until an -Syu when the kernel was upgraded.  I messed with it for quite some time and decided to just reinstall arch and start fresh (I had been meaning to for a while anyway) but the problem persists on the new install too.
I don't know what to do, any ideas?

thanks

Re: nvidia driver won't work

Recompile the "nvidia" package, after checking its _kernver variable against your kernel version.

Re: nvidia driver won't work

Have you had a look in '/lib/modules/2.6.24-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/' to see if the driver is actually there ?

The thing I would do in this case ( and I'm a notorious ass**** ! ) is logout, do a Console login, as root run
'xorgconfig', re-install the Nvidia driver (It'll bitch about it already being installed, just go ahead...) then reboot.

WARNING: if you run 'xorgconfig' it'll require your monitors horizontal and vertical scanning frequencies. If you don't know them you may be able to Google for them.

After any kernel upgrade / downgrade the Nvidia driver will require re-installation.

Hope this helps...

Re: nvidia driver won't work

well.. the problem is solved although i am not entirely sure how.  Some combination of alternating nvidia-xconfig, xorgconfig, and reinstalling the drivers did it

thanks for your help
