Arch on a quite old pc...

Hello,

I'm gonne buy a quite old laptop from my school with these specs;
-Intel Celeron 600Mhz
-64mb RAM
-8gig HD

Not really fast as you can see neutral
But wil Arch run on it (with Openbox/Fluxbox or maybe XFCE4) ???
I wil only use this laptop for surfing and chatting.

Greets from Belgium,

Re: Arch on a quite old pc...

I ran Arch on a Pentium 2 233 MHz with 128 MByte RAM and it worked quite okay. Maybe you could get a little bit more RAM and you should be set for what you want to do with it.

Re: Arch on a quite old pc...

After login 9MB memory
after startx with aterm and htop 21MB used
with fluxbox and firefox without any site open and htop 38MB used
with fluxbox and firefox with archlinux site open and htop 39MB used

try to use fluxbox/icewm
browser opera/netsurf [AUR]/kazehakase/firefox without flash and blocking pictures/links/dillo/elinks
if you open a site with big pictures -- it`s over
don`t expect to much performance
for everything else have a look at the lightweight application thread

hopefully this helps

In theory Arch should run much better. Though ZenWalk/Slackware is meant for lower-end hardware, Slackware is i386 optimized where Arch is i686 optimized which should give you better performance.

Re: Arch on a quite old pc...

The official install guide says that 128MB are necessary though. This is since Don't Panic I think (see the release notes http://www.archlinux.org/news/337/

Re: Arch on a quite old pc...

mm. i have to check that (i686)
but the 128ram-requirement during the installation doesn't sound to good

Re: Arch on a quite old pc...

does somebody know if it's even possible to install arch with 64mb,
so that the 128mb-requirement is more a recommendation in stead of requirement.
