Change cpufreq settings when unplugged.

Hi, I am new to using these cpufreq scaling programs.  I have installed cpufreq-utils and have it working in that when the mode is set to ondemand, it uses the cpu power accordingly, and when set to powersave, it stays on the lowest frequency.  My question is, how do I get it to switch when the ac power is unplugged. 

I would guess that I have to get the command

cpufreq-selector -g "governer"

to run the proper setting everytime there is a change in the ac cord.  But how do I do this?

Also, I the screen does not dim when the cord is unplugged, so I assume that these commands will go in the same place.  What is the command to manually dim the screen? and where do I put these two commands?

You may look at a package called laptop-mode
http://www.samwel.tk/laptop_mode/

The application supports settings for 3 modes : battery, sector and sector but lid closed
You can then make laptop-mode change your governor and/or cpu frequency when unplugged.

For now I decided to use cpufreqd, and it seems to be working fine.  I will try out laptop-mode-tools later on after I figure out more of how it works and if it will kill my harddrive.

Laptop mode won't kill your harddrive if you set up powermgmt  properly in laptop-mode.conf:

Set them all to 255, and all is well.
Also, use laptop-mode to control cpu frequency scaling. Load the cpufreq modules, but not the daemon. Then configure your settings in laptop-mode.conf:

BATT_CPU_IGNORE_NICE_LOAD=1
LM_AC_CPU_MAXFREQ=fastest
LM_AC_CPU_MINFREQ=fastest

Laptop-mode is great if it works on your machine. You will love it. smile
If it doesn't play nice, then you might just hate it, but it's worth a shot.

These are just values that laptop mode passes to "hdparm -B [value] [drive]" command.  from "man hdparm":

-B     Set Advanced Power Management feature, if the drive supports it. A low value means aggressive power management and a high value means better performance. A value of 255 will disable apm on the drive.

As a side note, in the majority of cases apm is enabled on laptop drives by default.

Laptop mode has scarred me (well my HDD to be precise) for life. My load cycle count is 824406 and counting, and this is on a 1 year old drive running disk power saving on laptop-mode for.. well, 1 year.

Basically, the moral of the story is... don't enable something without understanding the risks involved, and the consequences of your actions. In the case of laptop-mode tools, don't enable disk power saving unless you know what you're doing, and know how to set the parameters correctly smile

Your comment is highly relevant, thus I'd like to retrieve more information about my hard drive to see if those settings I've made (shown in my previous post)  are fit for my hard drive. Any suggestions?

I use laptop mode with the default-ish settings, so your post has worried me also. How bad is setting them all to 254 ? Would that retain any power-saving benefit? Oh and how do I determine my load cycle count?

I only really use laptop tools for hibernate on low battery. Maybe I should look into using scripts for that instead.

Ive had my laptop for about one month and the command smartctl -a /dev/sda |grep Load_Cycle returns:

Is this good or bad? I dont want to mess up my hard drive using laptop mode tools.  Here is my config:
