When inserted into the drive the cd:s mount fine and I can see what files there are, but when I try to view for example an .avi file, mplayer says "seek failed", and when trying to copy files to hard drive it says "Could not read file". Dunno if it matters but I'm using kdemod on a 5 day old Arch install and my cdrom line in fstab reads as follows:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0

Have you mounted the cdrom drive first ??
mount /dev/cdrom

Which kernel version are you running? Also when you try and copy the files, are you using konqueror, or trying to do it from a terminal session?

I stopped hal and mounted the cd manually with same results. Kernel is 2.6.24. Copying with Konqueror says "Could not read file" and copying from terminal says "Input/output error".

assuming the drive works, and that you have tried other cds, i have no idea whats up mate, sorry.

Well it seems the drive was the culprit. I changed it to another one and it reads cds just fine. Oddest thing is the drive works on another machine which runs Windows XP. I should have booted this machine to Windows and test if this machine is to blame or the OS, but I'm not going to change the drive anymore. The drive behaved a bit oddly on Ubuntu also before I changed to Arch, but at least it could get everything done.

well at least you got it sorted. although i have no simple reason as to why the drive would work in another machine
