/var/cache/pacman/pkg

i have 600 megs worth of packages sitting in the /var/cache/pacman/pkg dir. can i just delete them? or are they, or will they ever be needed ?

Well, they're already installed on your system, so you probably don't need them.

pacman -Sc will remove the old package files only.
pacman -Scc will remove all your cached package files.
