I installed Arch and the internet works, when i type "pacman -Syu" it works, but when i try and serach for any package using "pacman -Ss" it returns nothing, and when i try and install packages using "pacman -S", it says "cannot be found in sync db". Any help? Thanks.

can you post your /etc/pacman.conf and /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist? make sure you got a repo and server uncommented!

So what happens if you do a pacman -Syy?
Are there any files under /var/lib/pacman/sync/
Offline
under sync there are 3 folders (core, community and extra) with nothing in them. I will go and check what pacman -Syy does now...
Offline
yeah, I hope that solves your problem...
somehow you don't have a database, normally /var/lib/pacman/sync/repos/ are full of folder from each package with descriptions and other install files...
Offline
Ah yes "pacman -Syy" seemed to do the trick, thank you for that, but is it a problem that i didn't have files in /var/lib/pacman/sync/repos/?
Offline
If it was a clean install and you touched nothing, it is most likely a bug and you should report it. There is a section for bugs at the top menu.

Also, I see in your mirror that you are using the archlinux server by default (pacman basically works it's way down the list in mirrorlist until it connects). That server is throttled, and will go very slowly. Try moving a mirror that's near you to the top of the file.

Have a look up here to learn more on setting the right mirrors for your configuration:
