I'm configuring a new kernel, but I don't know what processor family to select... Core 2 isn't good I suppose, because mine is a Core Duo T230, not a Core 2 Duo. So what do I select? Pentium III? Pentium M? Pentium 4? I have no clue...

The T2300 processor is in family 6, model 14. You can confirm this by looking at /proc/cpuinfo. "Core 2 / newer Xeon" should be the right choice.

Okay, thanks... I'm gonna compile it without Generic x86 support, so I'll notice soon enough if it boots or not. Can anyone confirm a working kernel with that configuration?

it works for my T2400

There are sufficient resources to help you. The most obvious of which is http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Safe_Cflags and the information you seek is right there in bold.
Core Duo's architecture does fall closer to Pentium-M, but it definitely has a few more instruction sets which only Pentium 4 Prescott onwards offer. Some models are basically enhanced Pentium Ds, produced for the mobile segment. Thus, it has been suggested - though not "cofirmed" - by an Intel representitive that "prescott" is the better fit. In the kernel, you should choose Pentium 4 - the description includes Pentium D.
Take note that these are not 64-bit capable.
Personally I used Pentium-M for a long time without issue (until the arrival of that wise man), so it's fine too.

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.
