Recover deleted data from ext3 partition ?

A friend of mine just deleted something which he needs back. How could deleted data be recovered from an ext3 partition ?

Looks like it it very difficult, but it can be done, I don't know anything about data recovery, but google yielded the following thread with some useful names of programs etc.. to help.
