Startx brings up blank screen

sometimes when i type startx (once every 5 times or so) All i get is a blank screen. I am unable to ctrl+alt+backspace out of it or do anything else so i have to do a hard reset. What is the problem?

Re: Startx brings up blank screen

well in his defence i must admit that at least this particular problem seems awfully familiar to me:

  http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=44923

and this time I too have no clue why this is happening (might even be a different problem alltogether)

maybe for comparison my details:
Dell m65 precision laptop
nvidia quadro video card
1920x1200 tft screen
SliM / XFCE4 / wicd arch 686

the only thing i can find in my Xorg.0.log is that is cannot find module "type1"

the same setup runs fine on my Dell optiplex gx270 desktop with a 1280x1024 tft screen with a nvidia 6200 card and the same drivers.
only difference I can see  (apart from connecting wireless on the laptop) is that for the laptop 'hwd' did not produce a "modeline" for 1920x1200 that it did for 1280x1024, so I run it without a corresponding modeline but when it does run it runs perfectly.

can't help you here buddy,
stefan.

"the only thing i can find in my Xorg.0.log is that is cannot find module "type1""
for that you should comment out "type1" in the modules list in xorg.conf wink

Duh! i know That. I was just commenting on the fact that there arent any more errors in my X logfile, besides uncommenting mught solve the error message .... but maybe i'd need the type1 module.

stefan.
