gconfd error when opening firefox and thunderbird [SOLVED]

I have been using Arch for about six months and this is the first insurmountable (for me) problem I have come across.

I am running Arch with xfce4 and recently carried out a full update on Friday 04/01/2008 (pacman -Syu) which appeared to go OK.

When the pc was rebooted xfce4 took an age to completed loading and an error message was displayed (something to do with ICE* I thought it was to do with amarok which is occasionally flaky but I have not got around to sorting properly so did not pay enough attention).

When I attempt to start firefox or Thunderbird from the launchers I get an error message

Input/Output errror

if I run them from the command kline I get a more detailed error which contains the line:

Gconfd unable to create /tmp/orbit-alfie

I also have lost some functionality from the logout button which now only allows me to quit xfce4.

I have tried reinstalling xorg and firefox (following another post in the forum) and have checked the permissions on /tmp which look to be correct and which allow the user to create files under /tmp (again based on advice from this forum).

I tried installing epiphany instead but the same error occurs (although maybe I should have tried konqueror or something not gnome related)

links works without any problem which I guess rules out network issues

I have'nt found any other apps that fail (I tried Gimp and xchat which both appear to work ok)

I also attempted to use e17 but firefox still fails to run.

I have run full updates since but the problem still occurs

I am not sure where to look as I am not convinced that the error I am seeing is the actual cause or just a symptom of a larger issue. I have had a brief look through xorg logfile, syslog, user.log but only see gconf errors - it is not beyond the realms of possibility that I have missed something obvious though.

Thanks for your help

Leo

Re: gconfd error when opening firefox and thunderbird [SOLVED]

OK, some better error messages:
when opening amarok:

Could not read network connection list
/home/alfie/DCOPserver_palmer.blighty__

Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running

and when running firefox or thunderbird

GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 2: IOR file '/tmp/gconfd-alfie/lock/ior' not opened successfully, no gconfd located: No such file or directory)

** ERROR **: Resource problem creating '/tmp/orbit-alfie'
aborting...
/opt/mozilla/lib/firefox-2.0.0.11/run-mozilla.sh: line 131:  7216 Aborted                 "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

Also in errors.log I am getting

gconfd (alfie-7237): Resource problem creating '/tmp/orbit-alfie

Where can I find out what is wrong?

Thanks
Leo

Re: gconfd error when opening firefox and thunderbird [SOLVED]

I worked out what the problem was.

The gconf error was symptomatic of another problem, I had run out of disk space on my root partition.

In case it is of use to anyone, I checked the disk space using

df -a

and then resized the partition (after a bit of juggling)

Re: gconfd error when opening firefox and thunderbird [SOLVED]

I'm having the same problem with a fresh arch install.

GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 2: IOR file '/tmp/gconfd-rine/lock/ior' not opened successfully, no gconfd located: No such file or directory)

** ERROR **: I can't write to '/tmp/orbit-rine', ORB init failed
aborting...
/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.12/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 7366 Aborted
  "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

X suddenly shut down and I was on the login screen. So I logged in again. After that the error occured. There is enough free space on the root partition, rebooting doesn't help, the site in the error message doesn't really help and neither does google. I'm clueless sad Thanks for any help.
