Keyboard permission

Heyy all.

I need to use the '~' sign, which on my laptop with the GB layout, is the shift + # key. However, the keyboard layout I'm using (I think it's American) doesn't have this and I can't find it.

I looked up the wiki and found out that to switch the keyboard, I need to add the

 Option "XkbLayout" "gb"

to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf directory. However, It keeps saying permission denied when I try and access this.

I'm logged in as root, and could the problem be that I forgot to add a password to the root account? How do I manage this?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Dan

Re: Keyboard permission

Try this wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg ;maybe it will give you some new suggestions?

Re: Keyboard permission

Hey, well, I managed to find the tilde sign by pressing every button that I could lay my hands on until I found it =]

Now the problem is that when I first start up Arch I get to log in as root with no password asked for, I added a password using passwd root and added one, although, when I log into normal user and then try and get back into root using su root, it says I'm entering an incorrect password.

How can I solve this?

Re: Keyboard permission

Just asking, but are you sure your root passwd works (ie. if you start Arch in single user mode can you login as root to your terminal?)
