2.6.24 fails on an EPIA ML8000G

Hi

I have been running arch linux on my C3 Nehemiah ML8000G for about a year now
since I upgraded to 2.6.24 it fails to boot complaining from what I see to  be illegal instructions

has the build config for 2.6.24 changed since the 2.6.23 series or is it just that the 2.6.24 kernel is to blame it self?

forget about it

I just recompiled the kernel with C3-2 (Nehemiah) as the the proccessor class

any one that wants the modified kernel just ask and I'll post the link to it

Re: 2.6.24 fails on an EPIA ML8000G

I have just run into this as well.
I have have a Nehemiah-based machine for my server and was running 2.6.23-ARCH (whatever that is...), seems there has been a couple of kernel bumps in the .6.24 line and in true ARCH fashion decided to remove the /lib/modules/kernel-2.6.23-ARCH and put a kernel-2.6.24-ARCH folder in its place.

Since I needed to modprobe the usb-storage drivers (planning on putting arch on my eeepc) I couldn't because the modules folder for 2.6.23-ARCH had been removed in 2 kernel bumps... so a reboot to use the 2.6.24 resulted in oops

So now system wont boot cause default kernel is 2.6.24-ARCH and the fallback is 2.6.24-ARCH (mmm like good names, don't know what sub-version the kernel is)

s long story short, how do I get my machine booting again?

Re: 2.6.24 fails on an EPIA ML8000G

grab the arch linux installer cd and use the arch root=/dev/sd* bootoption to boot into the system

and then either grab the ABS tree and recompile the kernel or grab my kernel build here
http://www.qbstudios.net/archstuff/kern … pkg.tar.gz
and then install with pacman -U kernel26-2.6.24.1-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz

this will replace the kernel with my nehemiah specific kernel

I will see if I can setup a repository for this at some point

Re: 2.6.24 fails on an EPIA ML8000G

yer I booted off the installCD and pacman -U the 2.6.22 kernel
I am using that atm.

I did concider rolling my own but this is an underclocked machine (to go fanless). I do have an archlinux install in a virtualbox session on my Gentoo desktop so I may use that to build my own

but if yr kernel is good i will grab that

Re: 2.6.24 fails on an EPIA ML8000G

mmm interesting from upstream what they did
why did they do that with the i686 and C3?

I know the 2.6.24 had a load of arch changes (adn 2.6.25 has as well) but was it soo much that a generic i686 breaks C3 support?

@daedulus:

I have just encountered the same problem with my Via C3 based laptop, and also read your bug report FS#9565.
Is your modified kernel still available to download from anywhere? (The link above doesn't seem to work.)

Thanks.

@daedulus:

Thanks, I managed to get it a bit earlier.
Will try it out this afternoon on the laptop.

Added later: Installed and upgraded other packages, and everything seems fine!
Many thanks for providing this kernel. big_smile

I will try to set up a repository for a rebuilt up to date kernel until either the kernel issue is fixed or well I die big_smile
