help with audio... use to work???

hello again fello archers!

as i become morea linux user i am finding the necessity to have audio.  atm i cannot seem to get my audio to work.  i have installed alsa-utils and alsa-lib, unmuted and jacked up the volume yet nothing i do seems to work.  i have had audio work just fine before on arch using alsamixer however it refuses to work.... and yes i am part of the audio group.

my audio card is an ac97

thanks for any help you may be able to give me!
