I downloaded the archlinux i686-2007-08-2 Core .iso and burnt it to a CD
Then installed it (I selected ALL packages) on my Dell desktop and it seemed to install fine without errors.
Then I started it and it started up fine but only as a TTY when I was expecting a GUI.
I notice that there is no /etc/X11 directory nor, from what I can see, anything equivalent to xorg.conf
Obviously I've overlooked something fairly essential here
Please help

xorg is not on the install cd. You should have a read of this article, particularly this section. If you have a working internet connection then its just a matter of downloading xorg.

An Arch Linux install is pretty bare bones. No GDM, no Xorg, but all the basic tools you need to configure the system to your liking.

Thanks you for your replies.
OK, I did a lot of reading (well, as much as you can do in 2 hours) and I got things moving on the configuration front.
Now I'm trying to get /etc/X11/xorg.conf set up but I keep running into a problem when I test X that no usable screens are found.
The root of the problem seems to be that the file /lib/modules/2.6.22-ARCH/modules.dep cannot be loaded because there is no such file or directory.
What happened here was that as part of the configuration, I did pacman update which seem to have eliminated /lib/modules/2.6.22-ARCH and replaced it with /lib/modules/2.6.24-ARCH.
So, for this reason the earlier version cannot be loaded.
But how can I get the "nvidia" module (I have an nVidia GeForce4 MX 420 card) to stop looking for the older module and look for thr newer version instead?

Just a guess, but if you didn't reboot, you are still working under the old kernel, while trying to use modules and libs for the new kernel..also, I think you'll need the nvidia-96xx module for a GF4..

reinstall the nvidia driver.. that will probably help (it did for me)
