Hardware or Software Raid1 for server.

I have a on PC here which im setting up as a server, it has an onboard Pomise Fasttrack raid1 setup with 2x160gb idenetical drives. Now the problem is that the server is going to be ran headless and im not going to know if a drive fails, it only says on boot when a disk is currupt/missing (if there is a way please let me know). So i was looking at software raid and was wondering what would be better to use.

PC spec, 512mb ram, 2.8GHz Sempron.

Thanks

Re: Hardware or Software Raid1 for server.

Hardware raid has much better performance ...

You can use smartmontools for checking if your drives are ok: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Smart
